"Something Perfect is Pretty Dead"

A beautiful video by the popular "Time+Tide Watches", a well known watch youtuber was sent to us a few days ago. After watching the video, human touch has never felt so perfect.

In this video, Andrew traveled to Germany to visit A. Lange & Söhne, an exclusive watch brand centered around the traditional form of watchmaking, horology, and story telling on the wrist.

The watch is initially assembled with all in-house manufactured parts made of untreated silver, followed by testing and subsequent cleaning. The watches are then finished, a process that Lange is well known for.

One of the most beautiful parts of Lange watches, each watchmaker has a personal style of engraving and finishing their watches, and is provided almost full autonomy in the engraving process. These styles also change over time, as the watchmaker changes their style and techniques. The uniqueness in the engraving process provides a personality for each piece that is made, that is not seen in watch brands that produce watches at a production scale.

Lange is a 650 person company that produces 5,000 watches a year. There is a strive of perfection, but understanding that we as humans are imperfect. However, the imperfection is beauty; what one person can do is not the same as what another can to.

The imperfection provided by man's technique vs. the perfection of machine's technique becomes an important piece of the puzzle in understanding what is important to a watch collector.

Sometimes, perfection is not the truest beauty. Sometimes, being imperfect is what makes you beautiful.
